The 2008 World Conference against Atomic & Hydrogen Bombs called for
a Worldwide Action Campaign for a “World Free of Nuclear Weapons” during
the 20 months leading up to the 2010 NPT Review Conference
Under the theme of “A Nuclear-Weapon Free, Peaceful and Just World,” the
2008 World Conference against Atomic & Hydrogen Bomb was held in Hiroshima
and Nagasaki from August 2 to 9. Along with 94 oversea delegates from 32
countries, 270 people around the world participated in the International
Meeting (Aug. 2-4, Hiroshima), 6800 in the World Conference Opening Plenary
(Aug.4), 7500 in the Closing Plenary (Aug. 6) in Hiroshima, and 1900 in
the World Conference – Nagasaki (Aug. 9). 400 attended in the International
Forum held in Nagasaki on Aug. 8. The 2008 World Conference had the biggest
number of government and international organization representatives attending
it: 12 from 9 countries (Cuba, Ecuador, Egypt, Lithuania, Malaysia, Mexico,
Norway, Sweden and Venezuela), including the United Nations High Representative
for Disarmament Affairs Sergio Duarte and a representative of the Arab
League.
The World Conference participants pledged to redouble their effort to build up the movement pressing the governments to work harder for the abolition of nuclear weapons, particularly to make the 2010 NPT Review Conference a success with substantial outcome to achieve this goal. The World Conference kicked off a new signature campaign calling for a world free of nuclear weapons and global common action in preparation for the 2010 NPT Review Conference. The new signature campaign will urge nuclear weapons states to put into practice the “unequivocal undertaking” they agreed to at the 2000 NPT Review Conference and call on all governments to agree to immediately start negotiations aimed at the conclusion of an international treaty banning and eliminating nuclear weapons.
